Artist Statement

The genre of still life painting and particularly painting pears, has dominated my practice for some time. Looking at the paintings of Cezanne and Morandi, or the more elaborate Dutch still life painters, I have become fascinated by how the depiction of simple everyday objects can convey something more than the things seen.

Scale, composition and the framing of the subject in space and light, are all devices to extend beyond the representational and begin to encompass the imagination. By focusing in close and enlarging the subject matter, the paintings become objects for contemplation and reflection.

The pear paintings can be about human relationships, connections and closeness. The compositions emulate human body language and the titles can relate to the atmosphere and type of interaction. A simple title can allow the viewer to build their own story.
